RANGERS ENJOY A NIGHT OUT IN DUNSTABLE

Midweek win over Dunstable Town

Bob Rayner Reporting

Rangers travelled to Creasey Park for their 5th game in 11 days as they attempt to wade through the ridiculous fixture schedule courtesy of the Spartan South Midland League. Despite this, Rangers started brightly with Josh Urquhart heading wide from a first minute corner. Shortly after Town's keeper did well to snatch the ball from the head Marcus Wyllie. Lewis Patrick then had a free kick parried away and cleared for a corner, the subsequent corner headed over by Gavin James. Wyllie's run ended with his shot well blocked as Rangers continued to press. Patrick and James both had chances blocked with some timely tackles. After a quarter of an hour a long throw was well taken by Rangers keeper, Jack Brooker, who was fouled as he attempted to kick up field, earning Town's skipper the only yellow card of the evening. A good spell followed for Rangers as they piled on the pressure as Dunstable struggled to clear their lines. With 35 minutes on the clock a neat lay off by James for Keiron Schmidt to hit a pile driver that looked a goal all the way before Town's keeper produced a brilliant save. Adam Morris took the corner and James headed against the far post before smashing the rebound high into the net to give the visitors the lead. More good play from Rangers as they looked to extend their lead with both Sean Coles and Wyllie denied by great tackles as Dunstable showed a determined mood. Three minutes from the break and James skilful run ended with a shot straight at the keeper. Wyllie should have scored after good play by Yearwood and James, the Rangers top scorer firing over with the goal at his mercy. Rangers were nearly made to pay for that miss in the 45th minute when a rare chance for Town flashed just past the post, the final moment of the half.

Dunstable came out for the second period in a positive mood with two shots in the three minutes, one high over the bar and the other well wide of Brooker's far post. Risborough hit back with James through, Town's keeper saving well with his feet. Coles followed up, his effort charged down. Town enjoyed a good spell but with Rangers looking strong in defence and both Urquhart and Alex Kedzierski in fine form, chances were limited. Having survived the early push by the home side, 65 minutes in and Rangers forced a corner, the ball cleared only as far as Urquhart, who shot high over the bar. Three minutes later and Yearwood burst forward from his right back position, evading several challenges, and surged into the Town area. He then played a neat one two with Wyllie before driving his shot into the net, despite the best efforts of the keeper, for a brilliant score to double the visitors lead. At the other end Brooker made a good take at his near post from a dangerous cross. A long throw from Yearwood found James, his turn and shot over the bar. A nice wall pass between Bailey Osborne and Ben Sturgess saw the former fire over as Rangers threatened again. Neat interplay involving Osborne, Yearwood, James and Patrick ended with a desperate block as Patrick shot, the loose ball was crossed back in for Yearwood, who headed over. In the closing minutes Osborne screwed a difficult chance wide following a clever pass from Liam Enver-Marum. The half ended as the first half did, with Town going close; a good save by Brooker conceding a corner with the resultant kick headed straight into his arms as the final whistle blew. A nice touch at the end as Town supporters clapped off the winning team. A nice gesture by a very friendly club. There is no let up for Rangers as they play again this Thursday in the Challenge Trophy when they travel to Ardley United, before another away day Saturday at Leverstock Green.

Rangers Man of the Match: Asher Yearwood. A great night for the Rangers right back. Defensively sound and brilliant in attack, offering width, pace down the flank and a goal threat too. Some great crosses and a superb goal.
