It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Peter Boland – a man whose tireless dedication, passion, and leadership helped shape Risborough Rangers FC into the proud and thriving club it is today. Peter's contributions are woven deeply into the fabric of the club’s history.
Peter’s journey with the club started in 1979, when he took charge of the Under-13s and later the Under-14s, Under-15s, and Under-16s, establishing strong foundations for youth football at Risborough. In 1983, Peter, alongside his great friend Mike McCormack, launched what would become one of the most successful teams in the club's history. Taking a group of 16-year-olds into senior football as the Rangers' reserve side in the Wycombe & District League, Peter's team achieved four consecutive promotions, claiming two league championships and multiple cups – including a remarkable treble in the 1984–85 season.
In the late 1980s, as others assumed management duties, Peter became club chairman and undertook the enormous task of delivering a clubhouse that would serve as the heart of the club. With the steadfast support of his vice chairman and close friend, the late Malcolm Hurst, Peter oversaw the fundraising and construction of the clubhouse, as well as the refurbishment of the main stand and dressing rooms. These developments not only improved the facilities for players and supporters but also symbolised the ambition and community spirit of the club. Peter was also instrumental in securing the alcohol licence for the clubhouse bar – a move that would prove vital in establishing a long-term, sustainable source of income for the club. His natural warmth, popularity, and ability to connect with people drew in new sponsors, players, and fans, all of whom were inspired by his passion for Risborough Rangers.
During his tenure as chairman and throughout his involvement in every aspect of club life, Peter made friends wherever he went. He often said that his happiest days were spent with the players, not just as a manager, but as a friend. That bond never faded. Even thirty years later, he remained close with many of those he had coached, and they, in turn, continued to hold him in the highest regard.
Peter Boland was more than a manager, chairman, or clubman – he was the beating heart of Risborough Rangers during some of its most transformative years. His legacy lives on not only in the trophies and the buildings but in the friendships, community spirit, and enduring love for the club he helped build.
We are forever grateful, Peter. You will be deeply missed – but never forgotten.
