THE BUILDBASE FA VASE First Round

Thirteen SSML clubs took the field in the Buildbase FA Vase First Round looking to join the three exempt SSML sides in the hat for the Second Round. By the time the final whistle of the weekend blew late Sunday afternoon six of the thirteen clubs had booked their passage with the pick of those being First Division Shefford Town & Campton who knocked out Step 5 side Ilford in their own backyard, the SSML visitors winning by a solitary goal to continue their excellent run in their debut season in the FA Vase. Baldock Town were the SSML’s biggest winners as they swept past former SSML side Hillingdon Borough winning 5-1 at home equalling the best result in the competition while Risborough Rangers saw off visiting Long Melford 3-1. Harefield United were another into the hat and further details of their game can be found in Mike Taylor’s report later in these ramblings. Also adding their names into the hat for Monday’s draw were New Salamis who travelled to Norwich United and overcame their hosts by the odd goal in three to reach the Second Round for the first time in their history while in an all SSML tie Ardley United hosted Tring Athletic and with the sides level at 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes it was straight to penalties which saw the Hertfordshire team winning through 4-3. AND FINALLY
Mike Taylor reports - Having watched Harefield’s somewhat fortuitous victory at Penn & Tylers in the previous round, I was interested to see how their next opponents Kent Football United would fare. The visitors from Dartford, who play in the South Eastern Counties League were only formed in 2010, mere newcomers compared to the ‘Hares’. To be fair, for the first 20 minutes or so the visitors seldom managed to get out of the own half, but would Harefield’s profligacy in the visitors penalty area prove to be their undoing, with a whole series of misplaced passes, shots and the woodwork. Harefield’s right back Green, on 30 minutes, had other ideas drilling a shot towards the visitors goal, which aided by an unfortunate deflection found itself in the back of the net 1-0. For the next 10 minutes or so the visitors began to push forward with greater determination, but Harefield’s back four remained calmly resilient. 10 minutes into the second half and the home team’s custodian had his fingers tingling when he parried a fierce shot, the ball then played with immediacy down the centre of the park to the feet of Pacquette, who had probably waited all afternoon for an opportunity that he was never likely to miss 2-0 then, followed by a rest on the bench for the goalscorer. The third and final goal (80th) from a delightful cross and the Hare’s were well and truly in the next round. For Mr Green, a birthday celebration, I hope the badger’s leave your pitch alone while you are away…Enjoy. Of course in any game, at some point the referee deserves a mention and probably the Assistants as well…no names here, but only ONE dud whistle between the three of you … bet you don’t do that again??? - The Roving Ref.

Talking of match officials this weeks Tweet of the Day goes to Aylesbury Vale Dynamos for the following gem – 4 minutes played Lino has cramp already … ? Match stopped temporary.

The result of this week’s Team of the Day Poll with 341 votes cast is:-
Shefford Town & Campton 46.3%
Stotfold 21.1%
Aston Clinton 20.2%
Harpenden Town 12.3%
