KINGS LANGLEY...1 RISBOROUGH RANGERS...2

Mark Brennan reports

Rangers progressed to the quarter finals of the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division Cup with a narrow but well deserved over Kings Langley.

Just over a month ago Risborough beat Kings Langley in a League game. Last night the starting team showed seven changes from that fixture and one of those, Rio Connell, set up Captain Elliott Buchanan in the 12th minute though his shot went narrowly wide. Langley’s Harry Peterson did likewise for the home side six minutes later whilst on 20 minutes, debutant Zak Jospeh set up Connell but with the whole goal to aim at he somehow put it wide.

Risborough’s pressure finally bore fruit on 31 minutes when a corner routine saw Connell pull the ball back for Keano Robinson to fire through a group of players to put his side one up. They nearly doubled the lead two minutes later but Buchanan’s effort was met by a decent save from Kings Langley's Tom Morrell.

The home side did get an equaliser before half time as a Rangers move broke down in midfield and the busy Edu Toiny-Pendred was played through to comfortably shoot past Henry Upstell in the visitors goal. Half time, one each.

Rangers were forced into a change at half-time as Addison Garnett, who had painfully chipped his teeth in a first half challenge, was replaced by Micah Williams. The first action of the half saw Toiny-Pendred miss a highly presentable chance on 51 minutes whilst ten minutes later a bullet of a shot from Buchanan stung the hands of Morrell though no one in red was able to pounce on the loose ball.

The visitors should have been two up on 71 minutes when a powerful cross from Josh Williams was met almost on the line by Buchanan but he somehow sent the ball shooting across the face of goal. That could have proved costly two minutes later but Toiny-Pendred put his header over when it seemed he had to score. The home side were made to pay for that when Micah Williams went on a mazy run on 78 minutes and curled an effort past Morrell for his first goal in senior football (much to the joy of his very proud dad Manny who was helping direct operations form the bench!)

A succession of substitutions and some good, controlled possession helped Risborough see out the game though they were indebted to Upstell for a fine save on 90 plus 5 min as he kept out a decent effort from Jamie Ovington.

Risborough will now host Harpenden Town in the next round on a date to be confirmed.
