Young striker impresses in four nil victory at Arlesey

Bob Rayner reports

Despite travelling to Arlesey Town Saturday with four regulars missing, Rangers came away with a comprehensive four-nil victory. With Ben Sturgess injured, Keiron Schmidt ill, Liam Enver-Marum suspended and Ellis Hercules unavailable, manager Mark Eaton was forced to make several changes, particularly in the midfield where Alex Kedzierski played his first game since having an operation at the end of last season. New signing Ollie Hogg also came into the side whilst Asher Yearwood dropped back from his striker role to play in a three. There was also a rare start for Harry Scott and for new striker Wiktor Makowski, who impressed last week at Hoddesdon on his debut from the bench. Gavin James made a welcome return too, following his three-match suspension, scoring two late goals after coming off the bench. Rangers dominated the first half with Hogg and Kedzierski showing their class. The ever-lively Yearwood's glancing header off Jamie Robinson's cross showed the visitors early intent. Rangers took the lead on three minutes after good work from Hogg, his cross knocked down by Yearwood to Makowski who made no mistake with a smart finish from 12 yards. Four minutes later and Scott was unlucky when his fierce low strike hit the foot of the Arlesey post. After 12 minutes the home side registered their first shot, straight at Connor Hunt. The Rangers keeper cleared to Scott who raced downfield and crossed to Yearwood. The Rangers top scorer did well to bring the ball down, swivel and shoot, bringing a brilliant save from the Arlesey keeper. Another Rangers foray saw Makowski's effort well blocked, with Town breaking quickly before shooting wide from a good position. Rangers countered with a Makowski cross volleyed well wide by Joel Read. A great move from the visitors followed and another good effort from Scott was well saved, the ball falling to Rangers right back Joe Fitzgerald following up, his strike deflected wide. Arlesey mounted a rare attack with Hunt claiming a high ball under pressure. Rangers soon took control again with some nice possession football. Hogg's attempted chip shot was well held. Arlesey were forced back, defending deep as Makowski's dipping volley just cleared the bar. In the 31st minute Rangers deservedly doubled their lead, this time Makowski turning provider. The speedy striker raced onto Scott's measured pass, sprinting beyond the Arlesey defence before squaring to Yearwood, who coolly slotted home. Arlesey replied with three corners in succession with Hunt punching the first over his bar, Fitzgerald then heading the next one behind, before Yearwood headed clear the third. Rangers hit back with Scott again in the action as his near post cross was deflected for a corner. The same player then fired over from distance. The last action of the half saw Rangers' skipper Josh Urquhart's clearing header averting the danger, ensuring that the visitors went in for the break with a two-goal cushion.

The second half saw fewer chances as Rangers looked to consolidate. After five minutes Yearwood clipped a good pass into the Arlesey box, the ball just skimming the top of Makowski's head. Five minutes later and neat play from Makowski set up Scott, his strike curling just past the post. Nearly twenty more minutes passed without incident as the Rangers management made changes to the personnel on the pitch. Understandably Kedzierski, Hogg and Scott, all of whom have played very little football of late, made way for Gavin James, Jamie Rudd and Rico Greco, also returning after illness. This reignited the game with Sean Coles doing well to send a dangerous ball across the face of the Town goalmouth as Yearwood stretched a leg. Makowski picked up the loose ball and cut inside to fire a fierce shot that was just inches away. Arlesey weren't finished yet however and with 15 minutes remaining Hunt did well to deal with a free header. Soon after and another chance for the home side, this time the shot was well over from outside the box. With one minute of normal time remaining Yearwood surged into the Arlesey area to slip the ball to James, the tall striker taking one touch before smashing home to make it three. The icing on the cake came in time added on when good play between Yearwood and Greco saw the latter cross to Makowski. His clever first-time volley was brilliantly parried by the Arlesey keeper. James reacted quickest to the loose ball and made no mistake in claiming his second and Rangers' fourth. Late in stoppage time Arlesey could have pulled one back but for fine reactions from Hunt to deny them and ensure a rare clean sheet for Rangers.

A good win on the road for the second week running with plenty of positives. Hunt is showing his class in goal whilst Read and Urquhart look back to their best in the heart of the Rangers defence. A welcome return for Kedzierski (how we have missed him!) and a good debut from Hogg, as one would expect from someone with his pedigree. Lively up top too with Makowski again impressing and Scott having his best game yet in a Rangers shirt, whilst James looked hungry for goals on his return from his enforced break. With more players hopefully returning for Tuesday night's game at home to Ardley United, a good opportunity to build some momentum. Kick off on Tuesday is 7.45pm.

Rangers Man of the Match: Joel Read. Despite this being a fine attacking display, it was built on a sound defensive base, particularly in the middle where there was a big aerial battle. Read, along with Urquhart and the two full backs, dominated this, in the air and on the ground, with Joel's left foot also launching many of Rangers' attacks.
