DEFEAT LEAVES VISITORS COCK-A-HOOP

Rangers go down by odd goal in dismal home defeat

Bob Rayner reports

As I was leaving 'Windsors' after this sad affair I overheard a visiting Cockfosters' player comment to a colleague as they were leaving. 'They were c**p' he muttered, when referring to Rangers following his teams win by one goal to nil. It would have been churlish of me to have pointed out to him that his team were only slightly less so, after having watched a display so abject and devoid of any entertainment by both teams that I almost demanded my money back. In his defence I would say that this was Cockfosters' fourth game in eight days and yet they showed a youthful exuberance of grit, determination and desire that was to be admired, despite the lack of good football played. One can see how the opposition managed to produce a shock win at title favourites Leighton Town last Saturday, with a packed defence and midfield that stifled Rangers at every opportunity. The first half produced not a single save from either keeper as Risborough's build up play was thwarted and the ball cleared upfield countless times. Rangers chances were few with Ricky Miller's 12th minute chip easily caught and a shot from full back, Jamie Robinson, screwed wide 10 minutes before half time. Cockfosters had one shot in the 25th minute, a half chance fired well wide under pressure.

Gratefully there was a little more action in the second half. Just a little, mind! Four minutes in and a nice turn from Miller before firing over from the angle. Five minutes later and Kieran Schmidt blazed over from distance. Shortly after, a mistake at the back by Rangers presented Cockfosters with a rare chance they should have converted, a header the wrong side of the post with the goal gaping. At the other end a Miller free kick was slammed into the Cockfosters wall and cleared. A good counter down the right by Cockfosters ended with a hooked shot lofted over the Rangers crossbar. 20 minutes followed without incident until a complete give-away by Rangers substitute, Rico Greco, gifted Cockfosters a winner, the ball slid home from close range. Rangers chased an equaliser and some good interplay in the Cockfosters area saw Ben Sturgess' shot deflected for a corner, the resultant kick defended well by the visitors. Another Rangers corner in the 43rd minute was headed goalward by Joel Read but it was an easy take for the keeper, his only 'save' of the match. Another give-away by Rangers and Cockfosters were through on goal, Connor Hunt doing well to get a hand to the shot and Joe Fitzgerald covering round to clear off the line under pressure. In the closing seconds a Rangers corner was headed wide by the Rangers keeper, who had come up for the kick. It was the final act of an unhappy afternoon; unless you're from Cockfosters that is!

Rangers will need to pick themselves up for Tuesday's derby at Aylesbury if they are to avoid defeat. Hopefully the return of skipper Josh Urquhart and influential midfielder Ollie Hogg will be the boost needed.

Rangers Man of the Match: Joe Fitzgerald. In a match with few commendable performances Joe stood out with his work rate and consistency. Looking to get forward whenever he could and completing his defensive duties in admirable fashion, he improves with every performance and has settled in nicely since signing from Leighton.
