TABLE TOPPERS HELD

Scoreless draw against Stotfold in feisty encounter

Bob Rayner reports from Windsors

For the second game in a row Rangers had to be happy to share the spoils from a scoreless draw. Following on from Saturday's goal-less encounter against Baldock Town, Rangers drew again on Tuesday evening with top of the table Stotfold in a game of few chances for and no goals. Unlike Saturday however, when Rangers missed a penalty and plenty of other chances too, the Stotfold game was a far more even affair. Despite the lack of goalscoring opportunities, Tuesday's match was an entertaining one with both teams going hammer and tong from the start. The only downside of a game played with a great competitive edge, was the visitors relentless haranguing of the match officials. Rarely have I heard a team so vociferous in their complaints, appealing in unison for every challenge to the point of being incredibly tedious. If I have any complaints about the referee, Terry Dawkins, who had a very good game nonetheless, it was that he didn't book or sin bin anyone, though it would have been difficult to single out one player when there is an entire chorus, including the manager, at it! Despite this, it was a great contest to watch with two teams at their best, each with their own styles. Rangers looking to build opportunities from midfield and Stotfold looking to get the ball forward often and early in a more direct manner. Rangers new signing, the much-travelled former league striker, Ricky Miller, looked very lively in the opening minutes with some dangerous runs and a good chance. Stotfold hit back and a flurry of action in the Rangers box followed by the home side clearing after some pin-ball wizardry. With the ball back and forth and both defences on top, the crowd had to wait twenty minutes for the first shot, Miller firing wide after some good build up play from Rangers involving Keiron Schmidt and Ollie Hogg. Five minutes later and a Harry Scott through ball almost set up Rangers' Wiktor Makowski, the Stotfold keeper doing well to gather at his feet. On the half hour mark Stotfold tested Connor Hunt in the Risborough goal for the first time, a decent strike from distance producing a very good save. With ten minutes to the break Miller was fouled for what looked a certain penalty, only for the referee to declare it just outside; where is VAR when you need it? The free kick was fired straight into the Stotfold wall and cleared. In the closing moments of the half Miller was neatly picked out by Makowski, the frontman firing across the face of the Stotfold goalmouth.

The second half started as the first had finished with both teams playing at pace. An early Rangers corner saw skipper, Josh Urquhart unable to turn the ball goalward. Good play from Scott and Miller set up Asher Yearwood, his shot tipped around the post for a corner. 15 minutes into the half and Miller's long-range effort was easy for the keeper. At the other end Stotfold did likewise, an easy catch for Hunt from a shot from distance. With neither defence giving any quarter, chances were few and far between. Joe Fitzgerald did well to clear for Rangers under pressure following a dangerous ball in, halfway through. With 15 minutes remaining a Rangers move, started by the excellent Jamie Robinson, ended with Scott shooting low across goal and hitting the far post. The rebound fell to Fitzpatrick, but he too was unlucky, his follow up well blocked by a defender. Stotfold countered, a decent break ending with a shot high, wide and not too handsome. Stotfold followed this up with another chance, again the shot high over the bar from the edge of the Rangers box. Risborough came back with Scott just unable to get a toe on the end of Michael Harding's ball. With five minutes of normal time remaining, it was the visitors turn to hit the woodwork. With Hunt racing off his goal-line he was just beaten to the ball, the lofted shot hitting the bar and the post before being cleared to safety by Ben Strugess. In the closing minutes a Rangers corner was punched clear under pressure before a late mazy run from Jethro Odumosu saw his clipped shot easily taken by the Stotfold keeper.

A good point against a good side and a fourth clean sheet in a row. A possible penalty (I was in line, and it was a pen!) could have won it. A good solid performance at the rear and going toe to toe in the midfield, Rangers showed they are a now a match for any team in this division. New signing, Ricky Miller, despite tiring toward the end, looked the real deal. Risborough will be hopeful of continuing their recent good form when they travel to Shefford Town & Campton on Saturday.

Rangers Man of the Match: Josh Urquhart. A magnificent display from the skipper, alongside Sturge in a solid looking back four. He is back to his best, dominant in the air, good on the ground and calm in dangerous situations.
