Rangers double over Shefford Town & Campton

Bob Rayner reports from Windsors

Asher Yearwood scored two to take his total to 22 goals so far this season as Rangers came from behind to beat Shefford Town & Campton on Tuesday night. The win keeps Rangers in fifth place in the table as they completed a double over an energetic Shefford side. It was a good start from Rangers with Scott denied from close range and Makowski fizzing a shot across the face of the goal in the first minute. Two minutes in and Rangers took the lead when skipper, Urquhart, headed powerfully home from a cross by Dobson. Shefford were not behind for long however and in the ninth minute the visitors pulled one back when Day neatly controlled, turned and volleyed home from just outside the box. On the quarter hour mark Rangers' Harding found Makowski who squared to Miller who should have scored, the ball scrambled away by some desperate defending. Soon, Makowski was again in the action, squeezing in a shot straight at the keeper. Shefford broke quickly and a good ball in from their left found Metcalf at the back post to slam home from close in to give the visitors the lead. A spell of stalemate followed until the 30th minute when a Shefford effort flew well over the Rangers bar. Two minutes later and a mazy run and shot was safely gathered by Hunt in the Rangers goal. In the 37th minute the Shefford keeper did well to keep out Dobson's fierce free kick, parrying at his near post. With seconds of the half remaining Miller was sin binned for dissent, meaning Rangers would play the first 10 minutes of the second half with ten men. A goal down, things looked bleak!

Despite being a man down Rangers were on top from the start of the second period with Makowski bursting through and firing just wide of the far post. Schmidt's volley was well blocked shortly after, and Dobson's low strike was gathered well as Rangers pressed. More good work from Makowski set up Yearwood, whose snapshot was drilled straight at the keeper. Midway through, a Shefford free kick from distance was fired over, the only time that Hunt, in the Rangers goal, came close to being troubled throughout the second period. Rangers were soon back at the other end with Yearwood producing a good turn and shot. With 75 minutes gone Rangers finally got their reward when the excellent Makowski burst away from his markers and hit a superb left foot drive into the far corner of the Shefford goal. Four minutes later and Makowski was again in the action when he was fouled by the Shefford keeper in the air, earning Rangers a penalty which was put away by Yearwood, despite a good effort from the keeper. With eight minutes remaining Rangers made it four after Makowski chased down a back pass, forcing the keeper into a poor clearance. The ball fell to Yearwood 30 yards out and Rangers' top scorer gratefully lobbed the ball back over the keepers head into the empty net. Shefford's substitute, Ingham, was shown a red card for a kick on Hunt in the 87th minute, giving Rangers the easy task of seeing out the final minutes for a four-two victory. This was Rangers fourth win in a row and confidence looks high. Despite being a goal down at half time they dominated the second period and got their reward. Saturday will be tough when a resilient Leverstock Green visit 'Windsors' but with Riz in this mood they should fear no one.

Rangers Man of the Match: Wiktor Makowski. A good first half and an excellent second half. Good work rate, willing running and great ability. His finish for his goal was class and his pressure on the keeper led to two goals for Yearwood. An example to other young players!
