Ricky Miller hat trick as Rangers bounce back at Biggleswade United
Bob Rayner reports from Second Meadow
Following on from Tuesday's narrow defeat to Dunstable Town, a weary Rangers travelled to Biggleswade United on Thursday with the slimmest chance of making a play-off place, dependant on Stofold's result elsewhere. In the end it was all academic however, as despite a fine victory by five goals to two at 'The Second Meadow', Stotfold did the business against Champions, Leighton Town, and rightly earned the runners-up spot. Rangers got off to the best of starts when from their kickoff Louis Walsh, Asher Yearwood and Ricky Miller combined neatly for Keiron Schmidt to open the scoring with a clever chip as United were still tying their boot laces! Two minutes later and the ball was again in the United net, this time though the offside flag denying Miller. The home side awoke and Rangers keeper, Connor Hunt came out to head clear and missed, fortunately Joel Read tidied up behind. Eight minutes in and Rangers were two up. Schmidt did well to find Walsh and his pass was slammed home by Miller. Moments after and Miller shot over after good work from Wiktor Makowski. Shortly after and Miller was put away by Yearwood, the frontman strongly holding off his challenger and sliding the ball past the advancing keeper for his second. A shellshocked United were four down after 14 minutes, Dobson's free kick smashed into the top corner from 25 yards. United rallied and Read did well to block a dangerous ball before United's Rhiney fired over following a good move down the left. At the other end Read was close to Dobson's high ball, sliding in but failing to make contact in front of goal. Soon after Walsh burst through the Biggleswade defence and blazed over when he should have scored. United pulled one back on 25 minutes, Rhiney catching the visitors square and outpacing his chasers to coolly round Hunt and score. The same player was in again a few minutes later, foiled in the end as Rangers scrambled back. With ten minutes to half time Rangers midfielder, Ben Sturgess did well to win his tackle before shooting just wide from distance. United were not done yet, however and Josh Urquhart, who had another fine game at the back for Rangers, made two good interceptions in quick succession. Read was again picked out by Dobson at the other end and the former should have scored with the goal at his mercy just before half-time.
Biggleswade came out quickly for the second period and Urquhart was again called upon to clear up. A good save by Hunt followed soon after as Rangers looked a little sloppy. Eventually Rangers broke out and Makowski forced an excellent save off the opposing keeper at close range. United came back and Urquhart was forced into a good tackle to thwart an attack. Six minutes into the half and Yearwood did well to find Miller wide right. Miller beat his man and despite being fouled, continued his run-on goal, shrugging off the challenge before slotting home his third of the game and Rangers' fifth; the referee doing well to play the advantage. Miller again went close four minutes later, hitting the side netting from the angle. United reduced the deficit soon after when Hunt inexplicably dropped the ball at the feet of Rhiney, the striker gleefully sliding the ball into an empty net. Yearwood dug out a shot over the bar after a good cross from Fitzgerald. Sturgess then split the home defence with a great pass to Harry Scott who cut inside and shot just past the far post. Hunt took an easy catch at the near post as United countered before Rhiney should have scored, blazing over from a good spot. Following on so soon after Tuesday's hard match Risborough began to tire a little and Rhiney was almost through before Urquhart nipped in to head back to Hunt. Hunt then made a good catch high at the near post as United pressed with five minutes to go. A United corner was scrambled away after Hunt parried a point-blank header with Fitzgerald getting the final clearance. Another corner followed with Rhiney shooting well over the bar. Rangers finished strongly however, with Liam Enver-Marum and Yearwood doing well to set up Scott whose shot was deflected for a corner. The game ended with some more good skills by Scott, his low shot saved at the near post.
A good win on the road that puts Rangers back in third place. After a disastrous start to the season it has been a remarkable turnaround for Mark Eaton's side and despite missing out on that second place play off place the team can be proud of what they have achieved in the second half of the season. On Saturday they are at home in their final league game of the season against Tring Athletic where a win will cement third place. Saturday's game kicks off at 3pm with the Rangers' Under 6's the guard of honour for the first time.
Rangers Man of the Match: Ricky Miller. The Miller-Man at his best, scoring goals! When he's on this form he is a handful for any team. His strength on two of the goals to hold off the challenge and his eye for goal when presented with a slight chance is exceptional. Ran the channels well and a thorn through the middle too. A real strikers performance!
