Rangers battle to earn the points against Burnham
Bob Rayner reports
A 58th minute goal by Christian Johnson was enough to earn a much needed win for a very young Rangers against a good Burnham side at the Kamtech Stadium on Saturday. In an entertaining end to end match, Johnson's strike ensured Risborough's first league win since September 14th. In a game that could have gone either way Rangers started with two new signings, defender Rohat Matyar and midfielder, Patrick Matejko, both on loan from Barnet and both making impressive debuts. Another new signing, Iker Noguero Leon, was on the bench before coming on in the second half for a lively cameo. It was just the tonic Rangers needed after two disappointing defeats, and a well earned one against a Burnham team that have scored 27 goals in their previous 13 league games. Rangers, fielding nine teenagers, started brightly forcing an early corner that was eventually scrambled clear following some pin-ball in the box. Three minutes in and a good move by Rangers ended with Johnson teeing up Hayden McConnell who fired wide. Burnham countered and a timely interception was required by Matejko to clear the danger. Rangers again threatened as George Caille's strike was well blocked. Another Rangers corner fell to Johnson who couldn't quite get any power, the keeper saving at close range. Burnham then enjoyed a good spell, with twice, Rangers keeper, Dave Saunders doing well; first firmly taking a shot straight at him and then delivering a good punch on a dangerous free kick. On 21 minutes Risborough's Kwesi Ntim produced a good run, his shot blocked with a timely tackle before Burnham hit back, Saunders pushing the ball away for a corner. Another shot by the visitors soon followed, high over the bar after a neat turn. More good work from Ntim and Matejko set up Lois Fountain, whose effort was inches wide. With ten minutes until half-time a cutting move from the visitors saw Saunders pull off a good save low down. Back at the other end and Rangers should score; Caille's run and cut back straight to the feet of Fountain in front of goal, the Rangers striker screwed his shot wide from a great position. Two minutes later and a superb pass from Saunders was flicked on by Johnson to Abdullah Jellal whose volley fizzed past the far post. More good work followed from Ntim to set up Johnson, whose shot was blocked by two defenders. A last minute effort from Burnham sailed overs Saunders' crossbar as the referee blew for the break.
It was Burnham that emerged from the dressing rooms for the second period in the livelier fashion, with the excellent Josh Chamberlain making an early clearance as the visitors threatened. A good full length save by Saunders and another great tackle from Matejko to deny Burnham, soon followed. 11 minutes into the half and Saunders again saved well, this time with his with his foot, as Burnham threatened to overrun the home side. In the 58th minute however, Rangers took the lead against the run of play after some battling work by Ntim and Fountain, the ball finding Johnson who cleverly held off his marker to score from a tight angle. Burnham tried to counter with a long range effort high over the bar soon after. Then a long throw from the visitors was flicked on into the safe hands of Saunders but with Rangers well marshalled by skipper Chamberlain at the back, chances were restricted to long range efforts as the home side looked to manage the game out. With ten minutes to go a curler from Burnham hit the back stanchion. Rangers broke up field with Fountain doing well to set up substitute, Noguero-Leon, his well struck shot producing a good save. During time added on Noguero-Leon produced another fine strike, this time deflected off target by a defender's leg. The last chance for Burnham, a free-kick into the Rangers box was cleared to the edge with the follow up shot fired well over from distance, to the relief of the Rangers faithful. The final whistle soon followed with a great cheer from the 138 crowd, well, most of them, anyway. It was a good effort from both sides with Rangers showing great spirit and character. Hopefully they can carry that through to Tuesday night's game away at Reading City.
Rangers Man of the Match: Kwesi Ntim. There were several candidates from this game but you just can't ignore Kwesi's work rate. He was everywhere. Whether it be joining with the attack or battling back to break up play, he had it all today, including some incredible skill when on the ball. A delight to watch,
