Nine man Rangers hold out for win

RISBOROUGH RANGERS 2 BALDOCK TOWN 1

Match report by Mark Brennan

Rangers moved up to fifth place in the early season rankings as they chalked up their fifth SSML Premier Division win on the spin though they had to come from behind to overcome visitors Baldock Town.

Both sides took a while to get going, the first effort of any note not coming until the 13th minute when Baldock’s Dennis Nkrumah put a header over. Two minutes later, Rio Connell went on one of his trademark runs down the wing and sent in a great cross that was met by home captain Aaron Minhas who put his effort just wide.

On twenty minutes, however, the visitors took advantage of some hesitant home defending and Nkrumah finished with some style to give his side the lead. Rangers regrouped and Minhas saw an effort saved by Eben Tulomba and Andrei Chiriac sent a shot just wide. Half time 0-1.

The first notable action of the second period saw Rangers keeper Ben Bridle-Card do well to save a 53rd minute Baldock free-kick. Minhas then saw his header saved by Tulomba who was also equal to a fine effort by Connell on the hour mark. However, the Baldock keeper blotted his copy book five minutes later when his poor kick was pounced on by Elliott Buchannan who set up the onrushing Manny Williams to slot home. Game on.

A second mistake by Tulomba in the 77th minute proved even more costly for the visitors as Manny Williams closed him down and kept his composure to calmly strike the ball into the unguarded net.

The final 10 minutes then saw the referee take centre stage. Keano Robinson, already booked at the end of the first half, was given a second yellow and thus a red for seemingly taking too long over a throw-in. Even the visiting bench thought it harsh. Buchanan was then booked and sin binned for protesting the decision and Rangers had to play out most of the final period with nine men. This they did admirably as tired limbs managed to find an extra gear and Baldock failed to make their numerical advantage count.
