Chiriac Brace Lifts Rangers Past Welwyn

James Chennells27 Oct - 11:36

Buchanan’s early strike and Chiriac’s late double restore winning ways at the Kamtech, as Rangers leapfrog AFC Welwyn 3–1.

Mark Brennan Reports

Rangers returned to winning ways with a well-deserved victory over a much-fancied AFC Welwyn and in the process leapfrogged their opponents in the League table.

It was the visitors who created the first notable opportunity when Core Wilson put an effort wide when well placed on nine minutes. Welwyn were made to regret that miss five minutes later when a pass from Aaron Minhas found Rio Connell who pulled it back for Elliott Buchanan who calmly slotted past Ashton Broome-Alexander.

From that moment it was pretty much one-way traffic in the chances created department as Rangers set about their opponents. Buchanan set up Rio on 16 minutes and the winger needs no-one to tell him that he should have scored. Buchanan then put an effort wide on 22 minutes whilst Rio again went close when well placed on 35 minutes. Risborough should have been out of sight by the time the Ref blew for half-time.

They were made to rue those missed chances on 53 minutes when Lee Dykes grabbed an equaliser from a rare Welwyn attack. This galvanised the visitors and for the next 15 minutes they enjoyed their best spell of the game. Wilson put an effort wide on 65 minutes as Welwyn ramped up the pressure so it was a great relief to the home support on 75 minutes when sub Andrei Chiriac got on the end of good move featuring Hassan Jalloh and Elliott Buchanan to restore Rangers lead,

They should have had a third on 82 minutes when Rio went through one on one with Broome-Alexander but the keeper made a good save to keep his side in the game. Any hope of a comeback, however, was extinguished on 90 minutes when a Rangers free-kick saw Manny Williams move the ball to Hamilton Antonio who in turn found Chiriac who slotted home from a tight angle.

Next up in the League is a trip to high-flying Cockfosters next Saturday, November 1st.

Before then, we are at home in the cup against Harpenden tomorrow, Tuesday 28th October.
