Rangers moved up to fifth place in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division with a comfortable home victory over Kempston Rovers. It was Risborough’s third win on the spin and stretched their unbeaten run to five games, setting them up nicely for the away fixture at near neighbours Tring Athletic on Saturday December 27 (KO 1pm).
They took the lead as early as the fourth minute when some good work down the right by EK saw his powerful cross turned into his own net by the unfortunate Meshell Yeboah. Rangers nearly had a second on 10 minutes when Lewis Albert connected with a great cross from Elliott Buchanan but his header went narrowly wide. Lewis tried an overhead kick on 26 minutes that sailed over the bar but the busy midfielder did get on the score sheet two minutes later when he connected with another great cross by Buchanan to head past George Rose in the Kempston goal.
Rangers then proceeded to create and miss a succession of decent chances, Rio Connell putting a header wide on 32 minutes after a cross from Scott Walsh whilst the 41st minute saw the busy Josh Williams go round Rose only to see his goal-bound strike kicked off the line by a Kempston defender.
Just before the break Rangers did get a deserved third when some good work by Josh Williams saw captain Buchanan swivel in the area and give Rose no chance with his strike. Half-time, 3-0 to Rangers.
If home fans thought that there was going to be flood of goals in the second period they were to be disappointed. An early injury to Lewis Albert disrupted Rangers rhythm and though Rio brought out a save from Rose on 57 minutes, the second half failed to reach the heights of the first for the home side.
To their credit Kempston never stopped battling and on 71 minutes they finally beat the previously untroubled Kai Mussilihy in the home goal when Mekhi Angol ran onto a good ball and fired past the keeper.
The final 20 minutes saw both sides huff and puff but create little of note to trouble this scribe. However, three points is three points and whilst it would have been nice to score a few more or keep a clean sheet, the win keeps Rangers winning momentum going and in touch with the cluster of clubs at the top end of the league table.
