Rangers came back from a two-goal deficit and a man down to complete a morale boosting victory over local rivals Tring Athletic in an action- packed game watched by a season’s best home crowd of 291 (and many thanks to Moch & More for sponsoring).
Despite early pressure from the home side, with both Rio Connell and Hassan Jalloh going close, it was the visitors who took the lead on twenty minutes. A sloppy pass in midfield let in Dylan Fitzpatrick who ran unchecked at the retreating Rangers defence before shooting past Ben Bridle-Card.
Rangers continued to attack their visitors with Rio going close in the 26th and 29th minutes. However, their cause was severely hampered on 40 minutes when keeper Bridle-Card was sent off. Having trod on the ball from a back pass and losing his balance his mistake was pounced on by Bailiey Osborne who was then pulled back by the keeper leaving Ref Ben Twitching no choice but to show the red card. Centre-half Keano Robinson took over in goal and immediately made a fine save from a free-kick by Fitzgerald.
Manager Gary Meakin shuffled his pack at half-time but sixty seconds into the second period Rangers went further behind when a Tring break down the home sides right saw a cross turned home by Harry Jones.
At this point, a draw let alone a victory looked most unlikely but Rangers are made of stern stuff and the fight-back began on 59 minutes. Rangers Player Of The Month Rio Connell continued his fine recent form with a run down the wing only to be upended in the Tring box. Up stepped Andrei Chiriac to give Jake Alley no chance from the resulting penalty.
The visitors were then reduced to ten men as Harry Shepherd was a shown a second yellow on 75 minutes. Jon-Jo Bates then came on for a tiring Chiriac and within ten minutes JJ connected with a long corner to shoot home, albeit with a deflection off a Tring defender. 2-2, game on!
Very much energised by the large crowd, and in particular the “Ris Ultras”, Rangers went in search of a winner and it duly came in the 89th minute when a free-kick from the left fell to Manny Williams who stuck out a foot to poke home and spark delirium amongst the home support.
This was a game that will live long in the memory of all who witnessed it, particularly the Risborough supporters. The victory meant Rangers retained third position in the table in their quest for a Play Off place. Next up is an away fixture at Wormley Rovers on Saturday 11th April before a final home League game on Saturday 18th v Harlow Town. Come On The Ris!
