Rangers returned from a first ever trip to Wormley Rovers with the three hard earned points that guaranteed they will be taking place in this seasons Spartan South Midlands Premier Division play-offs.
For the hosts, this was the last game of the season and though they technically had nothing to play for – no relegation or promotion concerns – they certainly made a game of it and on more than one occasion Risborough were grateful for the saves of keeper Kai Mussilhy.
After Manny Williams put a ninth minute shot over the bar and Wormley’s Dylan Suleiman did likewise with his 11th minute effort, it was left to Andrei Chiriac to open the scoring in the 18th minute as a fine driving run by Hassan Jalloh found Rio Connell whose cross landed perfectly for Andrei to tap into an empty net.
Ten-minutes later Mussilhy made a fine stop from a header by Avto Akhsiahvilli and five minutes after that he managed to parry a shot by Shaq Ismail, the follow up somehow put wide from two yards by Zion Sinclair. The keeper also made a strong one handed save on 39 minutes before the home sides Carlos Simeon did likewise from a Chiriac effort. However, just before half-time a good move involving Exauce Kifwasima and Hassan Jalloh set up Andrei to shoot past Simeon and give Rangers a two-goal lead at the break.
The second period had a much more end of season feel about it and though Rangers, and Andrei in particular, went in search of a third goal it wasn’t to be. Wormley however did get on the scoresheet in the 87th minute when sub Alex Awobimde pounce on a loose ball in midfield and sent in a shot that took a big deflection to wrong foot Mussilhy and set up a nervy last few minutes for the Risborough faithful.
This time last season Rangers were involved in a relegation battle to avoid the drop to Step 6. Twelve months on they in a battle to move up to Step 4. Funny ol’ game football!
Come on the Ris!
