Risborough extended their winning run to four games but oh my, did they put their followers through the wringer to get there! Having raced into a four-goal lead on the hour mark, they then had a ‘mad ten minutes’ where they let their plucky opponents back into the game, ensuring the last twenty minutes saw plenty of nails chewed amongst the home support.
It took Rangers sixty seconds to take the lead. Jack Hutchinson ran at the Crawley Green defence before slipping a fine ball through to an unmarked Rio Connell who slotted home through keeper Cameron Grooms legs.
Though the visitors saw a seventh minute shot saved by Kai Muussilhy in the home goal, they went further behind on 12 minutes and a classic it was as well! Some patient build up play saw the ball fed to Josh Williams who cut inside his marker and curl a beauty from the edge of the area past Groom. Had goal written on it as soon as it left his foot.
Rangers had plenty more chances to extend their lead – Jack Hutchinson shot wide when well placed on 32 minutes, two minutes later Josh Williams did the same thing and just before half-time Manny Williams saw his header well held by Groom.
The second period initially saw Crawley Green on the attack but without troubling Mussilhy. On 56 minutes they were made to pay when a hopeful ball into the visitors box was missed by Groom but fell to Josh Williams who slotted home through the despairing keepers legs. This strike was followed four minutes later by Risborough’s fourth as a ball over the top was raced onto by Rio who rounded Groom and calmly slotted home.
With the game seemingly over and with a heavy fixture schedule coming up, Rangers made three subs just after Rio scored. Cue the ‘mad ten minutes’ mentioned earlier!
On 64 minutes a Rangers throw-in was missed at the centre of defence, allowing Ciaran Maher to run on and shoot past Mussilhy. Three minutes later a failure by Rangers to clear their lines allowed Maher to get in behind and fire the ball into the roof of the net. The visiting striker then secured his quickfire hat-trick on 69 minutes when showing determination to close down a ball that was been shepherded out to nip in and knock the ball into the home net.
Rangers then regrouped and recovered their composure and should have scored on at least two occasions to settle their supporters nerves! None more so than on 89 minutes when Josh Williams beat Groom to the ball at the edge of the area only to see his goal bound effort hacked off the line by a well-placed defender.
No one can say it’s not entertaining down at The Kamtech Stadium! Three points is three points at the end of the day and at this stage of the season that is the most important thing.
