Football. A funny old game eh!

Rangers came into this game top of the league whilst hosts Everett Rovers sat in third place having made a great start to life in Step 5 following last season’s promotion. They made a great start to this game as well, as on six minutes a break down the left saw a cross pulled back for Harley Sells to slot past Ben Bridle-Card. They might even have had a second three minutes later when Nathan Page saw a decent effort met by an equally decent Bridle-Card save.

After that? I guess one-way traffic would be a polite way to say that Risborough woke up and set about their hosts in a fashion many long-time followers of the club have never witnessed before.

On ten minutes the busy Josh Williams pulled the ball back for Rio Connell to shoot past Ayaz Kazi. Sixty seconds later Rio had his second as he beat the Everett offside trap to slot calmly past Kazi. Indeed, he nearly had his hat-trick on 14 minutes when his shot cannoned off the home bar.

Rangers third soon came, however, as a 19th minute corner routine involving Rio, Niko Muir and Josh Williams saw a save by Kazi fall kindly for Jordan ‘AJ’ Ajanlekoko who nodded smartly home. Ten minutes later some strong midfield hustling to get the ball back saw Niko Muir let loose an effort from outside the box to put Rangers 4-1 up. Three minutes later he repeated the feat with a shot so powerful two keepers wouldn’t have saved it.

The first half turnaround continued on 38 minutes when Rio set up David Appiah whose scuffed shot left Kazi wrong footed and Rangers 6-1 up at the break. And breathe!

Manager Gary Meakin used his half time talk to encourage his players to keep up the pressure and they obviously listened as five minutes into the second period Exauce ‘EK’ Kifwasima curled a wonderful effort past Kazi who by now must have been suffering with a bad back having to keep picking the ball out of his net.

He was also beaten all ends up by a 64th minute blaster from Muir that deserved better than to hit the Everett post and away to safety.

Three minutes later it was the turn of Josh Williams to take centre-stage as a trademark run and chop ended with a curled effort into the top corner for 8-1. He got his second on 75 minutes as another corner routine led to Rangers ninth and the tenth almost came along two minutes later as Muir and Bradley Bubb combined, Bubbzy effort just shading the post.

The home side did pull one back on 82 minutes when sub George Rice got in behind the Rangers defence to shoot past Bridle-Card. Their joy was short-lived, however, as a fine run by Williams saw him curl in an effort that went in off the post to bring up double figures for the visitors.

From 1-11 plus all four of the substitutes, this was a brilliant TEAM performance by Rangers. The result keeps Risborough top of the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division, a position they will still hope to be holding following this Saturdays away trip to Kempston Rovers.
