MIDWEEK DRAMA

Two sending's off as Rangers beat Leverstock Green

Report by Bob Rayner

There was plenty of action at the BEP Stadium on Tuesday night as Rangers came back from a goal down at half time to win by four goals to one, despite missing a second penalty. Both teams had a player sent off, with Leverstock Green also suffering a sin binning during a feisty match. There were also two penalties awarded and a goal for Rangers' new signing, Gavin James. The opening minutes saw Leverstock on the front foot with some good pace and movement as they attacked down the slope, with Rangers working hard to keep them at bay. The home side gradually settled and after six minutes Marcus Wyllie scuffed his shot well wide. Soon after the same player raced onto goalkeeper, Jack Brooker's pass before feeding Liam Enver-Marum in the Leverstock area. The striker turned to shoot weakly straight at the keeper. Some neat one touch football by Rangers soon followed, before Keiron Schmidt fired wide from a good position. Five minutes later and Asher Yearwood set up Schmidt again and this time the skilful midfielder hit a superb strike that was brilliantly tipped onto the post by the Leverstock Green keeper. The ball was recycled and this time Wyllie produced another good save with a decent effort. In the 28th minute the visitors took the lead. A relatively harmless attack from the visitors looked to have fizzled out as Brooker went to collect the ball wide of his goal. Somehow the normally reliable keeper fumbled and Daalberg was on hand to nick the loose ball and slam it into an empty net. Rangers almost hit back immediately when Enver-Marum chased a high ball, only to collide with the Leverstock keeper, allowing a defender to clear. A minute from the break and Schmidt's dangerous free kick fizzed across the face of the goal with no one able to get the important touch. At the other end a half clearance was smashed well wide before one of the visitors was sent to the sin bin for backchatting the referee. The player foolishly continued his protests from the bench, giving the referee no option but to send him off for good.

The second half saw Rangers in determined mood with Wyllie firing high and wide following a good run and Sean Coles forcing a good save from the visiting keeper. From the corner Wyllie forced another excellent save. Rangers almost presented Leverstock with another great chance when a misplaced pass was picked off, with the resultant shot flying just past the post. The equaliser arrived in the 55th minute when Wyllie cut inside his marker, rode two more challenges and tucked a low shot in at the near post. Eight minutes later and Rangers took the lead after a foul in the penalty area on the hard working Ben Sturgess. Wyllie stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot. Two minutes later and Wyllie was again at the penalty spot after another foul on Sturgess, this time however the keeper guessed correctly and saved. Shortly after, Rangers' Aaron Jewell received his marching orders for a foul, evening things up. Leverstock Green attempted to get back into the game and Brooker saved well low down following a good run. At the other end Wyllie curled a nice free kick to the far post, well taken by the keeper. New signing Gavin James entered the fray and was soon in the action, flicking on the ball to Coles, who raced through to make it 3-1. James got on the scoresheet himself with a minute to go, chasing through and taking advantage of hesitancy in the Leverstock backline, before lifting the ball over the stranded keeper to make it four. In the closing seconds a desperate shot from the visitors sailed harmlessly wide before proceedings were brought to an end.

Another good win against a lively Leverstock Green sets the Rangers up for a home game against fourth placed Hadley this Saturday. The home side will need to be at their best if they are to get anything from the in-form visitors.

Rangers Man of the Match: Ben Sturgess. Tireless in the middle of the park, screening the back four and getting forward enough to win two penalties.
