Rangers draw with Leighton Town as big game fails to up to its billing

Bob Rayner reports

The expectations prior to this game were only matched by the hugely disappointing game itself; Long spells of the ball changing hands, few chances and with the visitors content to settle for a draw long before the end. Rangers had the better of a first half of few chances. A couple of half chances for the home side in the first ten minutes before Marcus Wyllie had the ball in the Leighton net following a mistake by the visiting keeper. The goal was disallowed despite the Rangers VEO recording showing that the striker was clearly onside; a let off for Town. Three minutes later and a good ball from Josh Urquhart found Sean Coles and his attempted lob bounced wide. Shortly after Keiron Schmidt picked out Wyllie with a raking cross-field pass. Wyllie then squared to Evans Lamboh, who forced Town's keeper into a good save from close range. On 20 minutes Leighton registered their first shot, well over the Rangers crossbar from the edge of the box. Wyllie then produced a good run down the Leighton right, his dangerous cross cut out at the near post. Town had a great opportunity after 30 minutes, the ball screwed wide of the post following an easy chance. Five minutes later and it was Rangers' turn as Lewis Patrick crossed low across the face of the Leighton goal-face with Liam Enver-Marum just unable to get a touch. Town countered with an attempted lob from the wing, the ball harmlessly wide. With a minute to the break another great ball from Schmidt to Wyllie saw the latter shoot across goal and just wide of the far post.

If the first half had little excitement, the second contained even less, with long periods of the ball travelling from one end to the other. Yet, despite this it did at least contain two goals. And the first fell to Leighton Town from a well worked free kick after 10 minutes. The ball was played deep beyond the Rangers far post before it was headed back across goal for a simple tap in for Khan. Ten minutes later Wyllie went on a superb run, his shot blocked in front of goal, ricocheting among defenders and attackers before Town scrambled the ball away. Rangers forced a couple of corners before Asher Yearwood equalised with a good header following an pin-point cross from Lamboh. The remaining 20 odd minutes were played out with Rangers trying to break through with little success, with Leighton's back four in solid form. The visitors showed little intent, looking happy to settle for a point. When the final whistle blew Leighton celebrated the draw that probably confirmed a fourth place finish for them whilst Rangers showed their disappointment. A must win game at Aylesbury Vale next Saturday awaits with a Tuesday night cup game versus Long Crendon at the BEP Stadium, in between. Kick off Tuesday is 7.45pm.

Rangers Man of the Match: Josh Urquhart. Rangers skipper was dominant in the air and composed on the ground. His timely tackles and interventions helped limit the visitors chances. A typically eye catching display.
